Dr Mary Brennan established the ADPS project in October 2000. She directed the project within her remit as Reader in Deaf Studies at The University of Edinburgh.

Mary died on 23 June 2005, after a period of illness.

Eulogies given at Mary's funeral and published obituaries illustrate the depth of loss felt by family, friends and colleagues, as well as the international significance of her contribution to the human and linguistic rights of deaf people.

She is pictured here receiving the British Deaf Association's Medal of Honour in 2004.
